How long does it take from Milan?
About 40 minutes by regional train from Milano Centrale or Cadorna, no booking needed. It is the simplest way in: Como San Giovanni station is a ten-minute walk from the lake.
Where do I buy ferry tickets?
Only at the official Navigazione ticket offices on the lakefront or in the app: resellers around the pier add a margin to the very same ticket.
Do I need a car?
No, and you are better off without one: parking is scarce and the roads are narrow. Como runs on rails and on water — train, ferry and funicular cover everything.
What can I do in a single day?
Funicular up to Brunate as it opens, the lakefront walk to Villa Olmo, then a slow ferry towards Torno or Nesso in the afternoon: the best view is from the water.
Do taxis have fixed fares?
For many routes yes: ask for the fare before you get in. From the station to the centre it is a ten-minute walk anyway.
